First meeting in Novermber of 1894, Liverpool lost to The Black Cats 3-2, setting a precedent for the following two games. In the early days, this triple defeat pattern then broken by either a Liverpool win or draw seemed to be unshakable.

Slowly but surely as the teams entered the modern era, Liverpool began to gain traction against the side, winning and drawing more often than losing. Throughout the mid-2000s to the early 2010s Liverpool asserted themselves as the better team, in terms of victories, which continued right up to recent times and the last time Sunderland were seen in the Premier League, the year 2017.
