Liverpool vs Leeds United History

Leeds United Football Club rose from the ashes of Leeds City after the club was disbanded in 1919. A year later, Leeds were elected into the Football League, starting out in the Second Division, where they would spend much of their early history.

The Reds first hosted Leeds United at Anfield in 1924, securing a 1-0 win thanks to inside forward Dick Forshaw. Despite defeat, Leeds tested Liverpool’s legendary goalkeeper Elisha Scott, with Percy Whipp’s attempt on goal providing one of the game’s highlights.

The clubs’ rivalry grew in the 1960s and 1970s, when both sides were on the rise. Leeds, under manager Don Revie, were rescued from the brink of relegation in 1962 and went on to become First Division champions in 1969. A famous clash came in the 1965 FA Cup Final at Wembley, where Liverpool, managed by Bill Shankly, lifted their first FA Cup with a 2-1 win after extra time. Roger Hunt, Billy Bremner, and Ian St John were the scorers in a match remembered as a milestone for both clubs.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Leeds were a strong Premier League opponent, producing memorable clashes with Liverpool that featured stars such as Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, and Harry Kewell. Leeds were relegated in 2004 and spent 16 years outside the top flight before returning in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa. Their first game back was a thrilling 4-3 defeat at Anfield.

Liverpool have historically had the upper hand in this fixture, with more recorded wins both home and away. Still, matches between the clubs carry extra weight, shaped by proud histories, passionate fanbases, and the fact that both sides have, in different eras, stood among the most respected teams in English football.
