Atlético Madrid History

Atlético Madrid was founded in 1903 and has grown into one of the most respected and decorated clubs in Spanish football. Traditionally seen as the working-class alternative to Real Madrid, Atlético developed a reputation for being a gritty and hard working club, which is often represented on the pitch. The club’s history has been defined by fierce rivalries, title challenges, and a never-say-die attitude that mirrors its fanbase.

The turning point in modern club history came with the arrival of Diego Simeone in December 2011. Under his leadership, Atlético ended a long wait for silverware by winning La Liga in 2013/14 and again in 2020/21, while regularly breaking into the UEFA Champions League elite. Simeone’s era has also delivered a Copa del Rey, two Europa League titles, and multiple UEFA Super Cups.

Over the past decade, Atlético has become a fixture in the Champions League knockout rounds. Though they narrowly missed out on European glory, finishing runners-up in 2014 and 2016, the club has consistently punched above its financial weight, earning widespread respect for its disciplined style and team ethic.

Atlético Madrid Achievements & Honours

Atlético Madrid’s honours reflect both its historic roots and its modern transformation under Simeone. The club has regularly competed for domestic and European titles, often in direct competition with the biggest spenders in the game.

La Liga Titles – 11

Copa del Rey – 10

UEFA Europa League – 3

UEFA Super Cup – 3

Intercontinental Cup – 1

UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup – 1

Atlético’s most recent major trophy was the La Liga title in 2020/21. As of summer 2025, they are also competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, part of a major global showcase of elite teams.

Current Squad

As of the 2025/26 season, Atlético Madrid continues to be shaped by Diego Simeone’s influence, as a highly tactical and defensively solid outfit. Atletico are one of the most experienced sides in world football, led by their long term captain Koke. With the likes of Rodrigo De Paul, Jose Maria Gimenez and legendary Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann Simeone’s side has one of the strongest spines in La Liga.

The lack of star quality in the side has been questioned over recent seasons, but those questions were mostly answered by the signing of Julian Alvarez who has been a transformative player for the club. A few more key additions to the squad will help turn this already strong Atletico Madrid side into one that can compete on all fronts this season.

Fanbase and Reputation

Atlético Madrid is defined as much by its fanbase as by its footballing success. Rooted in Madrid’s working-class traditions, the club has always drawn support from those who identify with loyalty, humility, and hard work. Even during difficult periods, including relegation in the late 1990s, Atlético’s fans have remained intensely devoted, earning them a reputation as some of the most passionate in Europe.

The club’s growth on the global stage has not diluted its local spirit. While international support has grown due to Champions League exposure, big-name signings, and the new stadium, Atlético’s home crowd remains among the loudest and most intimidating. Matches at the Metropolitano are fuelled by identity and emotion, with fans playing an integral role in the team’s relentless approach.
