Manchester City History

Manchester City are a modern giant of English football, being one of the most dominant sides in Premier League history. But despite the club’s recent success, they originated from very humble beginnings. The club was formed in 1880 by St. Mark’s Church in West Gorton, they were officially rebranded into Manchester City in 1894.

Since the club's initial development they have had a very mixed journey through the 20th century. The Citizens had success in the early 1900’s winning the FA Cup in 1904, and securing their first league title in 1937. Success continued throughout the 50s and 60s adding more silverware to their trophy collection.

The club were relegated from the first division in 1983, they bounced back in 1989 and became a founding member of the Premier League in 1992. They were a consistent presence in the league but struggled to challenge at the top of the table. Huge changes occurred in 2008 as the club was purchased by Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi. Thanks to heavy investment the club quickly became a powerhouse of English football and won their first league title in 2012 after Sergio Aguero’s famous last minute goal against QPR.

Manchester City Achievements & Honors

Manchester City’s recent success has made them one of the most decorated clubs in England. With 8 league titles since their takeover in 2008, Manchester City have proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the league. Despite their success in domestic competitions, it was the Champions League trophy that was the treasure that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side wanted the most. In 2023 Manchester City finally claimed the Champions League trophy after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the final.

Current Squad

Manchester City has one of the most talented squads in world football, and this has been shown in their dominance of English football over recent years. The Man City squad has had heavy investment since their takeover in 2008, but no signing has been more important than their current manager Pep Guardiola who has transformed Manchester City into one the best sides the Premier League has ever seen.

But with veterans such as Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan looking likely to depart. New recruits such as Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov will be looking to make their mark on an already world class Man City squad. With Pep also entering the final years of his Manchester City contract, City fans will be hoping he can finish his reign at the club with even more silverware.

Fanbase and Reputation

While many look at Manchester City as a club built from their 2008 takeover, this is far from the full story. City is a club with deep-rooted traditions and working-class origins, dating back to their formation in 1880. Over the decades, the club developed a strong identity within Manchester, with long-standing ties to the local community and football culture.

Despite struggling through much of the 1980s and 1990s, City maintained a loyal supporter base. Even during difficult periods, fans continued to fill their former home, Maine Road, showing consistent support throughout years of relegations and instability. The club’s fanbase remained one of the most dedicated in the country, standing by the team regardless of on-pitch results.

The 2008 takeover transformed Manchester City’s fortunes, leading to unprecedented success and growth. While the club retained its existing loyal fanbase, it also attracted a new generation of supporters, both domestically and internationally. Today, City are one of the most widely supported clubs in the world, with one of the largest social media followings in global football, a reflection of how far the club has come, both on and off the pitch.
