Manchester United was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club but was renamed Manchester United in 1902. The club quickly rose to prominence, securing its first league title in 1908. Under Sir Matt Busby’s leadership, United became a global force in football. However, tragedy struck in 1958 with the Munich air disaster, which claimed the lives of several players and left others injured. Busby recovered and rebuilt the team, ushering in a golden era with stars like Denis Law and George Best, culminating in United becoming the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.
Following a period of inconsistency, Sir Alex Ferguson was appointed in 1986 and transformed the club into a dominant force, winning 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, and 2 Champions League trophies. Widely regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time, Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 marked the end of an era. Since then, United have struggled to replicate their past success, going through several managers in pursuit of a return to former glory.
Manchester United are one of football's most successful clubs, with a total of 68 trophies, the second most in English football. The club’s legacy is especially strong in the Premier League, where it dominated during the early years of the competition. Additionally, Manchester United has made its mark in European football with three Champions League titles.
Beyond its impressive trophy haul, the club has become a globally recognised brand, with supporters around the world. Known for its rich history and contributions to shaping modern club football, Manchester United remains one of the most respected and celebrated clubs in the sport.

The current Manchester United squad features a mix of young, talented players and high-profile signings eager to make their mark. While this squad differs from the elite teams of Manchester United's past, there are still standout performers, such as playmaker Bruno Fernandes and promising young talent Amad Diallo.
Fernandes serves as the creative force of the team, contributing an impressive 184 goals and assists in 290 appearances. Meanwhile, Diallo has shown his potential in key moments, including his crucial finish against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Under the guidance of newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United will aim to further develop this squad in the seasons ahead after a disappointing campaign last season.
With one of the largest fan bases in the world, Manchester United enjoys global support from millions of passionate fans. The club has over 64 million followers on Instagram alone, with supporters spanning across every corner of the globe.
Manchester United has built a strong reputation for its long-term success in English football. While many clubs rise and fall, United has remained a dominant force for decades. From the iconic Red Devil on the club’s badge to the famous chants like "Glory Glory Man United," these elements, combined with the club's continued success, have helped establish Manchester United as a globally recognisable brand.
