Liverpool v Everton History

The Merseyside Derby is one of English football's most renowned fixtures, with a rivalry that dates back over a century. Anfield was originally the home of Everton Football Club until 1892 when a rent dispute saw the Toffees move to Goodison Park and Anfield’s owner John Houlding founding Liverpool FC.

The stats speak for themselves, as not only is this English football’s most feisty derby but it’s the Premier League game that has seen red the most with a total of 23 red cards shown across all Premier League fixtures between the sides.

While this fixture has provided countless classics over the years, none have been more important than the 1989 FA Cup final. The meeting of Red and Blue was a rare sight at Wembley, being the first FA Cup final meeting between the two sides and only the second all-Merseyside final. It’s safe to say this game lived up to the anticipation, especially after Everton’s Stuart McCall scored with the last kick of the 90 minutes to take the game to extra-time. Liverpool ended up claiming a 3-2 win on the day as Liverpool legend Ian Rush scored an extra-time brace to bring the trophy back to Anfield.

While still highly competitive, the Reds have largely dominated this fixture in recent years, Liverpool winning 29 of 66 Premier League games between the sides to Everton’s 11. Liverpool also have a win streak to maintain at Anfield, winning their last four games at home. But Everton will gain confidence from their 2-0 win in 2021, which showed that they do have it in them to claim points at Anfield, making it a highly compelling watch.
