Despite only meeting for the first time in 2012, these two European giants have now competed on 15 occasions, in what have more often than not been decisive games. The first-ever matchup in the 2012/13 Champions League group stage didn’t disappoint. Real Madrid came back from behind twice before Cristiano Ronaldo secured a 90th-minute winner against his former rivals.
It wasn’t until the 2019/20 season that Manchester City claimed their first win against Real Madrid. They secured a 2-1 away win at the Bernabéu before backing that up with another 2-1 win back at the Etihad, which knocked Real Madrid out of the competition in the Round of 16.
The 2021/22 semi-final tie was easily the most notable between the two sides and arguably one of the most memorable in the competition’s history. The first leg was a goal fest, with Manchester City taking advantage of the home crowd by securing a 4-3 victory at the Etihad.
After what seemed like a more measured contest between the sides, Manchester City looked all but through, holding a 1-0 lead as the game reached the 90th minute. But super-sub Rodrygo came on to do the unthinkable and netted twice in the 90th and 91st minutes of the game, forcing the game to go to extra time. It then fell to the player of the tournament, Karim Benzema, to finish an extra-time penalty to send Madrid to the final, which he calmly executed.
