Both Liverpool and Real Madrid are two of the most successful sides in world football. Liverpool with 67 trophies and Real Madrid with 106 major trophies both clubs are the most decorated sides in their respective leagues. This success has certainly been reflected on the European stage, Real Madrid being the most successful team in Europe and Liverpool being the English side to lift the coveted Champions League trophy on the most occasions.
The European success of both of these clubs has led them into some crucial battles that has brought about a bit of a rivalry, especially in recent years. Liverpool laid down a marker first, defeating Real Madrid in the 1981 Champions League final, it was then over 20 years until these sides met again in 2009. Liverpool went on to do the double in the Round of 16 to knock Real Madrid out of the competition. This set of matches included a very famous Champions League night at Anfield as Liverpool defeated Los Blancos 4-0, largely thanks to a Steven Gerrard masterclass.
The heroics of the 2009 Champions League Anfield rout spelled the end of Liverpool’s success against Real Madrid. In fact Liverpool failed to secure a win in their next 8 meetings, including defeat in two Champions League finals. This horror streak did finally come to an end in the most recent meeting between the sides, as Liverpool claimed a 2-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool and Real Madrid’s European rivalry doesn’t end on the pitch. From the controversial Sergio Ramos tackle against Mohamed Salah in the 2018 UCL final that still gets spoken about to this day. To the shock transfers, such as the Alexander-Arnold Real Madrid Liverpool transfer saga that has recently seen Liverpool’s boyhood hero put on the famous white shirt of Real Madrid. For a fixture that has only played out 12 times this is one of football’s most sought after fixtures and you can see the next instalment with tickets to Liverpool vs Real Madrid this season.
1981 European Cup Final - The 1981 Champions League final saw the Reds claim their third Champions League title as they defeated Real Madrid in the first ever meeting between the two sides. While not recognised as one of the more entertaining finals, this fixture had real importance in solidifying Liverpool as a dominant side on the European stage. Alan Kennedy's sole goal was enough to seal the trophy for Liverpool in what was a strong defensive display from both sides.
2018 Champions League Final - This final truly was a final of spectacular goals and even more spectacular errors. A calamitous mistake from former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius led to Karium Benzema opening the scoring. Liverpool quickly got one back from Sadio Mane shortly before a moment of magic changed the game. Gareth Bale produced one of the Champions League’s greatest ever goals with his unbelievable bicycle kick. Another Karius error in the 83rd minute saw Bale get a second and the game fully slip away from Liverpool in a ‘Real’ night to forget for Liverpool Football Club.
2022 Champions League Final - In what was one of the less eventful Champions League finals of recent years, Real Madrid secured a 1-0 win against the Reds to claim their 14th UCL title. Vinicius Junior was the goalscorer on the night, proving that he was a man for the big occasions. Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending of the goal certainly raised some eyebrows as Vinicius was left to tap in the winning goal at the far post.
