Liverpool v RC Lens: First Ever Meeting

Liverpool FC and RC Lens have never faced off in a competitive fixture, adding an extra layer of importance to this final league-stage fixture of the 2026/27 Champions League. While it's not the first time the French side have secured Champions League football, opportunities have been sparse. RC Lens comfortably claimed their spot in the competition after a highly successful season under Pierre Sage, finishing in second place, only 6 points off the champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Plenty has changed since, most importantly the departure of manager Pierre Sage along with many of his key players. RC Lens have since replaced Sage with German manager Dino Toppmöller, whose core football philosophies and style heavily mirror the former manager. Liverpool can expect to face a highly intense side whose 3-4-2-1 formation will likely often fall into a solid back 5 when defending. While Andoni Iraola’s Reds will be huge favourites, especially at Anfield, they could remain vulnerable to transitions, with space in behind Liverpool’s midfield a notable issue so far this season.

As the final match of the Champions League league phase, it could be a vital fixture for both teams, who may still be looking to secure their place in the knockouts. But even despite the potentially huge stakes, this will be an exciting contest for both sides, who will finally meet on Europe's biggest stage, live at Anfield.
