Liverpool v Paris Saint-Germain History
Despite only meeting on six occasions, the history between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain has certainly picked up steam, especially in recent years. The Reds first competed with the French side in 1997, in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a competition contested by the winners of domestic cup competitions. Liverpool were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by PSG.
It would then be over two decades before these sides came face to face in Europe again, this time in the UEFA Champions League. In 2018 Liverpool drew PSG in the group stage, marking the first time the Reds faced PSG after their 2011 financial takeover, now boasting stars such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Liverpool won the home leg 3-2 in dramatic fashion, including a famous Roberto Firmino extra-time winner, but PSG claimed a narrow 2-1 win at the Parc des Princes.
The 2024/25 Round of 16 contest seemed pivotal for both clubs. The away leg in Paris saw Liverpool take a 1-0 advantage to Anfield with Harvey Elliot scoring in the 87th minute, despite PSG largely dominating. The home leg, however, was one of Liverpool’s most disappointing performances of the season. PSG quickly equalised through Ousmane Dembele, and a 5-1 penalty shootout saw PSG progress and eventually win the competition.
It seems almost like fate that these sides meet again this season. With Arne Slot’s ‘obsession’ with PSG, it’s ironic that this game could define not only Liverpool’s season but also the manager’s future.
