FC Barcelona History

FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 by Swiss-born Joan Gamper and a group of football enthusiasts in the heart of Catalonia. From the start, the club became a cultural symbol as much as a sporting institution. Its motto, Més que un club (“More than a club”), speaks to its long-standing role in representing Catalan identity and values through periods of political repression, especially during the Franco era.

On the pitch, Barcelona has long been known for attacking football, possession-based play, and world-class talent. The legacy of Johan Cruyff, as both player and later manager, shaped the club’s philosophy and defined its identity through the late 20th century. That vision was later realised through Pep Guardiola’s era (2008–2012), where La Masia graduates like Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta helped deliver some of the most dominant football ever seen.

In more recent years, the club faced financial and transitional challenges following Messi’s departure in 2021. However, under Hansi Flick, appointed in 2024, Barcelona returned to winning ways, claiming a domestic treble in his debut season. As of 2025/26, the club is positioned for continued growth, on the pitch and with the reopening of its redeveloped stadium.

The 2024/25 season saw a clean sweep of domestic silverware under Hansi Flick, winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. With a strong mix of experience and youth, Barcelona enters the new campaign as one of Europe’s most exciting yet balanced squads.

Current Squad

Barcelona’s 2025/26 squad reflects a deliberate rebuild under Hansi Flick, who is focusing more on developing this exciting Barcelona squad filled with young talented players. None more vital than Lamine Yamal, who can easily be regarded as the most exciting prodigy in world football. Flick is also managing to get the best out of the more experienced players in the squad, Raphinha having a completely transformative 2024/25 campaign, getting named as the La Liga player of the season.

Ter Stegen remains first-choice in goal, now backed by new signing Joan García as well as the experienced Wojciech Szczęsny. In defence, Pau Cubarsí has established himself as a regular starter at just 18, adding to the array of young talented players including Barcelona’s two midfield maestro’s Pedri and Gavi. Despite FC Barcelona’s current financial restrictions, the club has one of the most talented young squads in world football, and with Hansi Flick at the helm, the club looks likely to continue their success for many years to come.
