Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich History

    Head-to-Head Record

    Atletico Madrid Wins: 2

    Bayern Munich Wins: 4

    Draws: 2

The clubs’ first competitive meeting came in the 1974 European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. Luis Aragonés put Atlético ahead with a free kick in the 114th minute, deep into extra time. In the final seconds, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck equalised from long range. The final was replayed two days later. Uli Hoeness and Gerd Muller scored twice each as Bayern won 4-0 to lift their first European Cup. It remains the only European Cup or Champions League final ever replayed. In Spain, the defeat earned Atletico the nickname “El Pupas”, the cursed ones.

Atletico got their revenge 42 years later in the 2016 Champions League semi-final. Saúl Ñíguez scored a stunning solo goal to win the first leg 1-0 at the Vicente Calderón. In Munich, Bayern won 2-1. Antoine Griezmann’s away goal sent Atletico through to the final. Both sides had a penalty saved that night, with Jan Oblak stopping Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer denying Fernando Torres. That autumn, Yannick Carrasco gave Atletico another 1-0 home win in the group stage. Players have moved between the clubs too. Mario Mandzukic left Bayern for Atletico in 2014. Lucas Hernandez went the other way in 2019 for €80 million, a Bayern club record at the time. The sides last met in the 2020/21 group stage. Bayern won 4-0 in Munich, and the return in Madrid finished 1-1.
